Data Engineer
The easiest way to break into smart city tech is to be a data engineer. Most of these positions will require you to have a background in computer science or mathematics, but even that doesn’t mean you can’t break into smart cities without formal education—through platforms like Coursera, Udacity and edX, you can learn how to become a data engineer from almost anywhere. A good place to start your search is Smart Cities Connector Jobs, which aggregates data-engineer opportunities for smart cities around the world. Use keywords like smart cities and data analytics in your search.
Another option is Smart Cities Jobs. This site tracks job openings in smart cities and related fields. You can search by location and specify whether you’re looking for a full-time or part-time position. Entering location and specific keywords like data or engineer will help you quickly sort through your options. One of these sites should get you started on your search, but keep an eye out for data-related opportunities at other job sites as well. A quick search on LinkedIn, Indeed or Monster should yield plenty of results as well.

Database Administrator
If you’re hired as a database administrator, you could be responsible for making sure a company’s databases are secure and efficient. You may design and implement new databases, update older systems and manage network security settings. Because of the advanced technical skills required for this position, many employers prefer to hire candidates with a bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field. A number of universities now offer online bachelor's degrees in data science; such programs can help graduates learn practical tools to make data-driven decisions quickly and provide opportunities to develop software engineering skills. A master's degree in business analytics or information technology is also sometimes required by employers looking for professionals with strong analytical abilities.
If you decide to pursue a career as a database administrator, look for job openings at large companies that deal with large amounts of data, such as banks, healthcare organizations and large retailers. You can also find positions with government agencies, small businesses and non-profit organizations. As of 2016, employers are increasingly looking for candidates who have experience in cloud computing technologies and automated data analysis tools like Hadoop. Employers generally expect you to have several years of experience before they'll consider hiring you, so it's important to stay up-to-date on industry trends and participate in professional development opportunities like conferences and webinars if you want to advance your career more quickly.
DevOps Engineer
DevOps is a term that encompasses a set of methods and practices used to increase an organization's ability to deliver applications and services at high speed and with high quality. This may include agile software development, continuous integration, continuous testing, automated deployment and even IT service management (ITSM). In essence, DevOps means automating as much of your software development lifecycle as possible in order to achieve rapid delivery of high-quality software. As well as automation, it’s about collaboration between traditionally siloed departments such as engineering and operations (Dev/Ops) so that services can be developed in conjunction with specific infrastructure requirements.
As with any career path, there are a variety of skills you need to be able to do your job. Specifically for DevOps engineers, some of these include being skilled in areas such as virtualization and cloud computing, computer networking and telecommunications, and system administration (both Unix/Linux-based systems and Windows servers). As well as technical skills, you’ll also need to have excellent problem-solving skills to be able to resolve issues when they arise. You’ll also ideally have an understanding of various application development methodologies and approaches (such as agile or waterfall) so that you can design effective processes around them. And finally, you should be proficient in at least one programming language (ideally Python) so that you can automate workflows when needed.
Information Architect
These days, an information architect is a specialized job that requires years of training and experience. Information architects are primarily concerned with how data and interfaces are organized in order to make them intuitive for users, whether those users are looking at graphs or databases. To become an information architect, you should take courses in HCI (human-computer interaction) theory as well as learn software development languages like C++. Experience is also very important when it comes to becoming an information architect. If you want to break into a career in HCI, be prepared to devote at least 10 years of your life to training and learning new things every day!
So what does an information architect do? Although most of their work is done behind-the-scenes, they're responsible for organizing and structuring data to make it easy for users to find and access. Information architects also use software development languages like C++ in order to create user interfaces that are both usable and visually appealing. Many information architects have a background in computer science or software engineering before becoming an architect, but courses in HCI theory can help anyone become skilled at understanding how people interact with computers and other technologies. In many ways, there isn't much difference between an information architect and a computer programmer, except that information architects have to be much more fluent in terms of human interaction!
Network Administrator
The city’s RFP notes a requirement for an experienced IT expert with a thorough knowledge of network engineering who can not only design and maintain but also improve upon existing systems. The incumbent will take part in network implementation and maintenance, including security measures and operating system upgrades. He or she must also be able to work independently, troubleshoot problems (both hardware and software), ensure that data is backed up regularly, and meet set deadlines. This position requires at least five years of relevant experience as well as certification in CACI's MCTS exam for Microsoft Systems Engineer/Architecture: Enterprise Networking with Security or Cisco's CCNP Routing & Switching certification.
The role’s salary range is Rs.15,500 to Rs.28,000 ($245-$418) per month with a one-year contract and a one-month probation period. More details can be found in KSK News’ smart city consultant jobs 2022 tender notice posted online on May 21, 2022.

Software Developer/Engineer
Software developers and engineers play a vital role in helping to bring cities into the future. Developers can build new systems that use smart sensors and other high-tech solutions to help reduce traffic or air pollution, save on energy costs or improve emergency response times. Your job as a software developer might involve coding, but you’ll also spend a lot of time researching how other companies have solved similar problems. Even if you do develop your own application from scratch, it will likely work alongside existing systems so that it integrates seamlessly into a smart city environment.
If you enjoy using and learning new technologies, a career as a software developer is an excellent way to move into smart cities. In fact, many of today’s top cities are looking for talented developers to help them incorporate new solutions that use big data and other cutting-edge tools. You may also find opportunities working for technology companies who have already worked with one or more smart cities in your country. If you’re interested in a software engineering job, it’s important to learn about programming languages and platforms that are specific to your field. Some of these include Android (Google), C# (Microsoft) or Python (Apple).
