FATA Terror Funding Case: Supreme Court Issues Judgment on Karachi Killings
In a closely watched case, Pakistan’s Supreme Court today issued its judgment on whether military courts can try civilians for terrorism. The court ruled that military tribunals are constitutional. It also refused to give civilians immunity from these tribunals if they have links to militant groups. Many critics of these courts say they are unconstitutional and unfair because detainees have little or no access to legal representation and their trials last just three days. But there has been strong public support for them after militants rampaged through parts of Karachi killing hundreds of people in recent years. Human rights activists now fear that more trials will mean more arbitrary detentions and possibly extrajudicial killings by security forces trying to root out militants suspected of helping finance terror attacks in Pakistan.
The Latest from PEMRA on Sexual Harassment Awareness
PEMRA and other government organizations are trying to eradicate sexual harassment in Pakistan. While speaking at a recent conference on sexual harassment awareness, Federal Ombudsman Pakistan Naveed Aziz said that although Parliament had passed laws against sexual harassment in 1993, women continue to face abuse and violence daily. The Federal Ombudsman has also asked PEMRA to play an active role in spreading awareness about how to handle such cases; it is important for men as well as women to understand what constitutes sexual assault and how best to report it.
The Ombudsman has also suggested that PEMRA step up its efforts in broadcasting plays and dramas on TV, radio, and social media to raise awareness about sexual harassment. PEMRA has been asked to work with universities, colleges, schools, businesses, and hospitals to organize awareness sessions on preventing and handling sexual harassment. Students were also encouraged to take an active role in increasing public knowledge of what constitutes sexual assault. The Federal Ombudsman is a government organization that aims to improve governance by providing impartial dispute resolution for citizens and residents of Pakistan. They oversee national bodies such as PEMRA as well as provincial ombudsmen in provinces including Sindh and Punjab.
