Pakistani woman beaten to death by her father and brother for marrying the man of her choice
A 27-year-old Pakistani woman was beaten to death with sticks and other instruments by her father and brother for marrying a man of her choice.
Pakistani police officials said the incident took place on Wednesday night in Narang Mandi town, some 210 km (130 miles) south of the provincial capital Lahore. The victim's family members alleged that she had contracted a love marriage without their consent. They became angry when they found out that she had been staying at her husband's house after marriage, and they proceeded to beat her mercilessly until she died.
The police have registered a case of murder against both her father and brother. Investigations are still underway. This was not an isolated incident, as many cases of violence against women go unreported due to social pressures and taboos. Nevertheless, according to reports by human rights organizations like Amnesty International, almost 1,000 women were killed by family members in Pakistan last year for allegedly bringing shame on their families through any number of transgressions: from refusing to agree to an arranged marriage or being victims of rape.
Summary
Pakistan is on the receiving end of a lot of bad press for its ills- stories about terrorism, militancy, inflation, unemployment and now a story about a girl's brutal rape and murder. But there are plenty of uplifting Pakistan stories too. And here is one from today. A few days ago a girl was abducted by some men on motorcycles. Her family reported it to the police but there was little that could be done except to wait and hope that she would be found. The news soon made the rounds on social media with many people angry and outraged at what had happened. One woman who saw it posted the information on social media again with an urgent call for help to find this young girl before something terrible happened to her.
The post was shared by hundreds of people and they were able to finally locate her. The girl had been abducted and taken to an abandoned house where she was locked up with no water, food or toilet. Some of them even videotaped their crime. It is not known whether she will recover from her injuries, but at least now she is safe and on her way home to be reunited with her family. And one good thing about today's Pakistan is that there are many ordinary people like these who are helping make a difference in each other's lives by standing up for what is right and helping find lost girls, especially when no one else can or will do it.

A spate of sexual harassment cases have rocked Pakistan over recent months. In late January, six men were charged with gang rape after filming themselves attacking a woman and posting it on social media. Earlier in January, four men from Karachi, a city to the south of Lahore, were arrested for raping a woman and uploading footage to Facebook. Social media has often been criticized for failing to delete videos of graphic content soon enough and for not monitoring extreme material posted by its users properly. The country also stepped up efforts to counter so-called honor killings as part of broader legislation against domestic violence. The bill was passed earlier in February by both houses of parliament and is awaiting President Mamnoon Hussain's signature before becoming law.
