On the same day, we learned about the civilian casualties of military operations that have occurred in North Waziristan. Another topic discussed this morning is the possibility of setting up cricket boards for India and Pakistan. This is part of our stream of updates coming to you today from the Pakistani news channels Geo News and Express News.
Today, a 10-year-old girl was killed by a bomb blast in her classroom at school. When she started to get off her seat to answer a question, one of her male classmates pulled out an explosive belt and detonated it. Following that, another blast occurred outside of another local school. It is not clear who is responsible for these attacks, but they have lead many parents in Northern Pakistan to keep their children home from school today. This week also marks 100 days since Osama bin Laden was killed in Abottabad, Pakistan. Some analysts are trying to determine what his death means for Afghanistan and its future stability after western forces leave the country later next year.
The mid-day report
The terrorist attack in Peshawar has left people shaken. This is the latest in a string of attacks that started just yesterday with the bombing of a market in Quetta. The country is getting tired and angry with these senseless acts of violence. Parliament member Ayesha Gulalai shared her thoughts after being one of the few to escape last night’s deadly attack by tweeting, I was sitting inside as we got attacked by machine gun fire/grenades. I am so grateful to Allah & my colleagues who survived with me.
The attack started at a roadside restaurant in Peshawar, where gunmen fired at people eating dinner. About 100 people were inside at the time. At least 22 have been killed and many more are injured. This is just one of several attacks that took place yesterday and today across our country, targeting innocent people as they go about their daily lives. We have seen such acts of violence take place too many times now and it is up to us as a nation to take action and stop these barbaric acts by working together as citizens to ensure peace in our country once again.
The evening roundup
Pakistani Muslims have been celebrating the opening of an expansion in Karachi’s landmark mosque, that has been around for 1,000 years. The $12 million project will include 18 new domes, a basement level to store food and worshippers will be able to walk into the site rather than climbing up steep steps. A doctor who sexually assaulted his two daughters for more than 10 years has been given jail time and 15-year supervision order after admitting he abused them when they were under the age of 16. A woman says she was sexually assaulted by an Uber driver who kidnapped her then dropped her off two hours later after she offered him more money.
Pakistani Muslims have been celebrating a century-old mosque, that was also partly destroyed in a recent earthquake. Karachi’s Badshahi Mosque has welcomed about 40,000 people for Eid prayers since its doors were reopened today. The expansion is part of a six-month project to reconstruct and refurbish parts of the mosque, which dates back to 1673. Throughout Thursday worshippers offered their prayers at newly added floors above ground level. It features 18 new domes and a basement storeroom where food will be prepared for worshippers during long religious festivals.
